Essential Information About Shipping from China
Understanding International Shipping Costs for Sourcing from China
As
supply chain restrictions continue to impact global trade,
understanding international shipping costs has become more important
than ever. For businesses importing from China, transportation costs are
a critical factor in ensuring smooth product delivery to target
markets.
China, one of the world’s largest product producers, is a popular choice for manufacturers worldwide. However, whether you're working with a sourcing agent in Shenzhen or managing the process yourself, it's essential to factor in shipping costs when sourcing products from China. Below, we outline the main types of shipping options to help you make informed decisions.
Types of Shipping
1. Express Freight
Express
freight is the fastest—and most expensive—shipping option. Major
providers like UPS, FedEx, TNT, and DHL offer a variety of services. The
cost depends on the speed of delivery, with shipments arriving in 3 to
10 days. This option is ideal for urgent shipments, such as when you
need to restock your best-selling product quickly during peak seasons.
The process is expedited, but it requires careful planning, especially
regarding customs documentation.
2. Air Freight
Air
freight offers a faster alternative to sea shipping, though it’s not as
urgent as express freight. For packages weighing between 400 lbs and
1200 lbs, air freight is typically 30% to 40% cheaper than express
shipping. The cost is based on either the dimensional weight or the
actual weight of the shipment, depending on which is higher. This option
provides fast delivery at a relatively lower cost than express freight.
3. Ocean Freight
Ocean
freight is the most commonly used method for international shipping,
accounting for around 90% of global trade. If you're shipping large
quantities, ocean freight is an excellent choice, especially for heavy
items. China’s extensive seaport network, particularly on the western
coast, makes it a preferred shipping hub. Be aware of the difference
between Full Container Load (FCL) and Less-than-Full Container Load
(LCL). LCL can sometimes cause delays due to waiting for additional
shipments to fill the container.
4. Train Freight
Train
freight has been growing in popularity but comes with additional
considerations. Due to the current situation in Russia, certain HS codes
require additional import documentation, which can lead to delays. The
price for rail shipping has been steadily increasing, and careful
planning is required to avoid disruptions. We recommend train transport
only if specifically requested by the customer.
